Zorin OS, particularly Lite, also isn't a bad choice. One of the three environments: Cinnamon, MATE or Xfce. This makes me think it's best you use some flavor of Ubuntu: If this laptop is gonna be used for virtual learning you need something that's easy to use for the end user, has a large community to fix potential bugs, and has a lot of available applications and support, who knows what your kid will need to use while learning. You have plenty of Ram and HDD, your bottleneck is the processor, 1gh on a dual-core isn't a lot. You'd probably want the Core or Lite version. Just don't pay for the Zorin Ultra thing. I'd say try Xubuntu and if you don't feel it's 'easy' enough then you can try Zorin (which uses the same desktop environment as Xubuntu but customized more like windows) or Elementary. Lubuntu is made for to run on potatoes that have started to sprout and aren't good for cooking anymore, while Xubuntu does generally expect a computer from the last 15 years. I've always found kids pick up inerfaces pretty quick, but Lubuntu is more similar to windows by default, if that helps. Xubuntu or Lubuntu are both Ubuntu flavors for low-spec hardware and are generally pretty easy for new users. Zorin doesn't seem to do that, so I guess point in their favor. Now those would be more likely to be things looking wonky rather than truly broken, and you CAN install firefox or chrome on there easily enough- it's just something to be aware of. Epiphany, which is uses by default, is fine but there is a chance of compatibility issues with your child's school's site. That's probably more of a feature than a bug for being novice-friendly, but just know that it will often direct you away from mainstream software (like Google Chrome or Firefox for web browsing). It's not that they don't work, just that Elementary is highly opinionated about your software choices. I messed around with Elementary for a while on an old computer a couple years back (it was middling hardware from like 2010-11) and it ran fine.Įlementary is very sleek, but I'm not a huge fan of its app store, which tries to push you towards a pretty limited selection of curated apps that are very Elementary OS specific. Especially because every single one I've seen mentioned (except for Manjaro) is a derivative or flavor of Ubuntu. *buntu etc) matters less than the desktop environment being used here.
